English follows below.

Hello, this is Hiro from Wakamono Kimono.
Service in development
For this first newsletter, I’ll talk about an alteration app I’ve been especially into lately.
It’s an automatic kimono alteration calculator.
Added a pricing display
First, let’s look at the pricing display.
Here’s one example: altering a used men’s SS kimono to men’s LL. You get the work time and its estimated value like this.
- Measure the current kimono dimensions, enter them on the web, and check whether alteration is possible.
- Estimate the time for each step of work, then add them all up.
- Estimate what it would cost if you asked a wasai artisan to do that work.
- Divide that amount by the work time to get an hourly rate.
New made-to-order sewing
Even for sewing a brand-new kimono, there wasn’t much out there on how to do it properly with a sewing machine and patterns.
Books covered yukata and jinbei, sure.
We’ve turned each step into detailed videos, and built out the full set of patterns—3S through 3L, men’s and women’s, Japanese and English.
From new makes to alterations
On top of that, we’re adding alterations.
Alteration work varies a lot depending on the original and target measurements, gender, single-layer vs. lined (hitoe / awase), and more.
And those steps often overlap and intertwine, so you also have to get the order right.
Codifying oral tradition
We’re programming all of that so it customizes for each situation, and showing every step in video.
That way, even beginners in wasai can do alterations.
Still rough
The price estimates are simply based on market rates,
and the work times are still ballpark figures.
So I didn’t expect an hourly value of ¥7,000…
I’m not fully confident yet, but I’d say the rough hourly rate lands somewhere around there ^^
Still unfinished
Lots of parts are still under construction,
and the overall layout probably needs a fundamental rethink to be easier to use—
but I’ve published it for now.
What’s next
For now I’m calling it the Alteration Guide.
I’ll let you know when we ship updates.
