Web Tool “Shotcut MLT Toolbox”

Hello, I’m Hiro from Wakamono Kimono.

While creating videos explaining how to make kimonos, I absolutely needed “subtitles” and “translation.”

Especially when I wanted overseas viewers to watch my videos, I thought it would be convenient to have a system that could automatically create subtitles and translate them into multiple languages. Initially, I developed the tool as a Windows exe application.

However, there were several challenges when distributing it:

• Installation required, and it might not work depending on the environment
• Some people feel security concerns
• Had to redistribute every time there was an update

To solve these issues, I finally migrated to a Web application version!

Benefits of the Web App Version

By making it a web app, users can use it simply by opening their browser. No installation required, and the latest version is always available. Additionally, it’s secure and safe to use.

With this migration, you can now use the following features:

• Line Break Function: Automatically adds line breaks to subtitles and simple text. When text is too long, the characters become smaller to fit the screen and become hard to read, so this function adds line breaks before that happens.
• Translation Function: Translates subtitles and simple text into multiple languages. This allows you to reach users worldwide.

I’d like to add these features in the future:

• Automatic Transcription: Converts audio from videos to text and generates SRT subtitles synchronized with the timeline
• Cloud Rendering: When you start rendering after video editing on your PC, it uses up all the CPU and you can’t do other work. So, I’ll handle the rendering on cloud machines.

Development Background

I’m working with the desire to “let more people know about kimonos” and “spread Japanese culture to the world.”

However, the language barrier was a major challenge. Even well-made videos have limited reach when they’re only in Japanese. So I developed this tool, hoping to use it myself while also helping others who are doing similar outreach.

Using It in Practice

I myself have been using this tool to make my kimono-related videos multilingual. When I translated them into English and French, I saw a significant increase in access from people in countries I couldn’t reach before♪

Future Plans

There are still many areas for improvement. I plan to work on improving translation accuracy, UI improvements, and strengthening multilingual support.

I’d really appreciate feedback like “I’d like this feature” or “it would be better if this part was more user-friendly.”

Through this tool, I want to reach more people with Japanese culture.
