子供の頃、母は素晴らしいフワフワのスコーンを焼いてくれました。朝やアフタヌーンティーに、来客へのもてなしやごちそうとして食べました。

祖母の上品に刺繍の入ったテーブルクロスがかかったフォーマイカ社製のダイニングテーブルに座りました。そろいの刺繍の入ったテーブルナプキンも使っていました。

お母さんは素敵な瀬戸物のカップにセイロンティーを入れて、その美しいカップのお茶はアツアツのままでした！スコーンにバターとホームメイドの新鮮なジャムを乗せて食べました。まだ温かいうちに食べるのが大好きだったのです。

近頃では、いつもおいしいホームメイドジャムやカリンのゼリーと一緒に、冷めないうちに食べています。ごちそうとしてはホイップしたクリームと一緒に出しますが、おいしいんですよ！

自分一人のためには作りません。友達がやって来る時にだけ作ります。スコーンに合わせてイングリッシュブレークファーストティーを飲みますが、いつも母の最高の瀬戸物カップを使います。

スーパーではスコーンを買いません。ベイキングソーダやベイキングパウダーの味がするので好きではないんです。 たぶん必要以上にベイキングソーダなどを使っているんですよね？

ホームメイドのスコーンにとっては貧しい代用品であり、全く無駄で風味がないと、私は思うんですよね。

デイツスコーンやチーズスコーンを作ることを想像するだけでよだれが出てきます。食感や味わいもそうですし、いつも思い出すのは母とそのおいしいスコーンなんです！

When I was a child my mother baked wonderful fluffy scones! We had them for morning or afternoon tea with visitors or as a special treat. We sat at the formica dining room table which was covered with one of my grandmother's delicately embroidered table cloths, and we also used matching embroidered table napkins. Mum served Ceylon tea in her fine, bone china and it stayed piping hot in those beautiful cups! We ate fresh home made jam with butter on the scones and I loved to eat them while they were still warm.

Nowadays when I bake scones I always eat them hot with some delicious home made jam or quince jelly, and as a special treat I serve them with whipped cream....yum! I never make them for myself only - it is always when friends are coming to visit. I drink English Breakfast tea with them and I always use my mother's best bone china cups.

I don't buy supermarket scones, I can taste the baking soda or baking powder and I don't like that, maybe they use more than necessary? For me they seem a poor substitute for home made scones, all fluff and no flavour! When I think of making a batch of date scones or cheese scones it makes my mouth water - I think about the texture and the taste, and I always am reminded of my mother and her delectable scones!
